I've been keeping myself busy tatting, but my comp is down and I am not expecting spare money for a few more weeks, not that it is going to be spare.....I've got a lot of old bills that have to get paid!
My cousin got married in May. I made his bride-to-be bells for the bridal shower, but didn't make it to the shower so I tied them to the wedding gift which was a large doily. I'd been wanting to get more color choices so I finally bit the bullet and bought embroidery thread. The bride's colors were off white (I think) and lilac. I used a very pale yellow and different shades of purple for the bells. I made different sizes by using different amounts of the threads, separating them out as 2-ply, 3-ply and 4-ply.
I've made a couple more of the same large doily making small changes that may not even be noticeable without really looking closely. I've added a couple stitches here and there so I can make links in the chains that make it easier to see if a set of clover-leaf groupings is twisted. I'll post the pic in a few weeks.
I've been using embroidery threads for necklaces, too, which gives me some nice combinations, but I'd like to get some different sizes and colors of actual tatting threads. I think a size 80 would be quite a challenge. We'll see. Maybe I'll be ready in a few more weeks!
I had been using mostly Aunt Lydia's crochet thread, size 10, 20 and 30 in white and natural and a different brand in blue, red, pink, variegated pink and dark green. I recently saw a light green that I'd dismissed before and picked it up thinking it has a perfect purpose, but I just hadn't figured out yet what that was........ It turned out to be a necklace (go figure!), with gold plated glass seed beads along the top and moss jasper for the main beads along the bottom front of the necklace, with glass pearls toward the back of the necklace. I really like it!
Something else I've forgotten......different threads of the same brand have different feels to them from other colors of the same brand and size. This light green feels very soft. The dark blue of a different brand is pretty rough. Sometimes when I'm using different colors in the same item the stitches look different sizes......have to compensate but tugging the bigger stitches tighter.
I'll post pix as soon as I am able, hopefully sooner than later!
